Mediavine Journey takes you at 1,000 visits. The real tier needs about 27,000
894 words · about 4 min
Journey by Mediavine asks for 1,000 sessions from Tier 1 countries in 30 days. Mediavine proper asks for something different in kind: $5,000 of ad revenue a year. Because the second bar is money and not traffic, nobody can tell you how much traffic it is — except by measuring what a thousand pageviews actually earns. Across 1.17 billion pageviews and $6.84m of broker-verified ad revenue, the median is $15.21 per thousand. At that rate, $5,000 a year is about 27,400 pageviews a month. At the worst tenth it is 188,500. At the best tenth, 11,900. Your subject decides which of those you are.
- How it was measured
- Both bars are quoted from Mediavine's own requirements page, read on 2026-09-03. The RPM distribution comes from 123 display-advertising businesses whose traffic and revenue a broker verified before sale — 1.17 billion pageviews and $6.84m of ad revenue across 1,334 business-months. Those are not necessarily Mediavine sites, and we say so: they are display-advertising businesses, which is the same kind of earning. We do not convert sessions into pageviews anywhere, because the two are not the same thing and no measurement here supports a ratio between them.

Mediavine has two doors, and they are measured in different units.
Journey by Mediavine asks for traffic:
Receive a minimum of 1,000 sessions from Tier 1 countries (including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia) within a 30-day period
Mediavine proper asks for money:
Generate a minimum of $5,000 in annual ad revenue
Both quoted from Mediavine's own requirements page, read on 2026-09-03.
That difference is the whole problem. You can count your own sessions. You cannot count $5,000 a year until you are already earning it — so the second bar tells you nothing about whether you are close.
So how much traffic is $5,000 a year?
$5,000 a year is $416.67 a month of ad money.
To turn that into traffic you need to know what a thousand pageviews earns. That is the figure the trade calls RPM, and it is the thing this site measures: across 1.17 billion pageviews and $6.84m of verified ad revenue, from 123 display businesses a broker checked before they sold, the median is $15.21 per thousand pageviews.
At that rate:
| If you earn | You need, per month |
|---|---|
| $2.21 per 1,000 — the worst tenth | 188,537 pageviews |
| $15.21 per 1,000 — the middle | 27,394 pageviews |
| $35.05 per 1,000 — the best tenth | 11,888 pageviews |
So the honest answer to "how big do I need to be" is about 27,000 pageviews a month if you are typical — and anywhere from 12,000 to 189,000 if you are not. That is a sixteen-fold range, and it is not luck. It is mostly what you write about.
What you write about decides how far the door is
Same $5,000 bar, same maths, different subject:
| What your site is about | Earns per 1,000 | Pageviews needed |
|---|---|---|
| Finance | $29.73 | 14,015 |
| Home & Garden | $25.43 | 16,385 |
| Culinary | $20.59 | 20,236 |
| Pet care | $18.97 | 21,965 |
| News & education | $18.13 | 22,982 |
| Food & drink | $17.93 | 23,239 |
| Technology | $15.51 | 26,864 |
| Information & databases | $8.41 | 49,544 |
| Entertainment | $8.41 | 49,544 |
| Religion & spirituality | $8.07 | 51,632 |
| Hobbies | $7.07 | 58,934 |
| Gaming | $6.48 | 64,300 |
A gaming site needs 4.6 times the traffic a finance site needs to earn the same $5,000. Nobody tells you this when you pick a subject, and by the time it matters you have already picked one.
Three things to be careful about
Sessions are not pageviews. Journey's bar is 1,000 sessions. RPM is measured per 1,000 pageviews. One visitor usually reads more than one page, so the two numbers are not interchangeable — and we do not convert between them anywhere on this page, because we have not measured the ratio and inventing one would make every figure above wrong.
These are display businesses, not confirmed Mediavine sites. The RPM figures come from businesses that earned from display advertising and were sold through a broker who verified the numbers. That is the same kind of earning, on the same kind of site. It is not a claim about Mediavine's own publishers specifically.
A median is not a promise. Half the businesses measured earned less than $15.21. If you are in the bottom tenth, the door is seven times further away than the middle suggests. That is exactly why the table above shows the spread instead of a single reassuring number.
What this means if you are on Journey now
Journey's bar is genuinely low — 1,000 sessions in a month is a small site, and that is the point of the tier. The distance to the main tier is the part nobody quantifies.
1. Work out your own RPM before you plan anything. Take last month's ad revenue, divide by last month's pageviews, multiply by 1,000. That single number decides which row of the table above you are on, and it beats every estimate including ours. 2. Compare it against your subject, not against the average. A $9 RPM is poor for finance and normal for gaming. Our free tool will place your figure inside the measured distribution for your subject; nothing you type leaves your browser. 3. Remember the bar moves as you grow. $5,000 a year is a revenue target, so improving your RPM moves you toward it exactly as fast as growing your traffic does — and RPM is usually the cheaper of the two to change.
We have also measured that the order you are told to join ad networks in is now backwards: Raptive dropped its bar to 25,000 pageviews while Ezoic — the one every guide calls the easy first step — raised its to 250,000 people a month. If Mediavine's $5,000 looks far off, the network you were told to start with may not be the one to start with.

Every figure above recomputes from that table. The arithmetic is one division: $416.67 divided by your RPM, times a thousand.
